What is Unshackled?
Unshackled exists to help bring an end to human trafficking and slavery and encourage a personal commitment to pursue justice. Since 2011, this work has involved awareness raising of the realities of human trafficking both in Melbourne and in Southeast Asia. This global issue is one that can be tackled on a local level – by changing habits, changing culture, changing how we use our voices.
A survey at NewHope Baptist Church in November 2013 showed that as a result of this advocacy, during the previous two years 53% had given financially to trafficking interventions, 70% had talked with their friends about the issue, 42% had signed a petition regarding trafficking and 70% had chosen to purchase Fair Trade or ethical items. In just over two years there was a marked increase in awareness and activism amongst the community, evident through advocacy, letter writing and ethical choices.
How can I get involved?
Prevention – Help us spread the news! We are always running events to raise awareness of these issues and encourage people into action. If you love to organise, decorate, speak, read articles, encourage or spread news about something worthwhile, you can volunteer with us!
Policy – We are constantly meeting with politicians and devising new policy requests, to make sure that people are best protected from the evils of trafficking. If you have a brain for policy or law, or love to have coffees with politicians, you can be involved in the work that we do!
Pray with us – Receive updates to pray for the work of combating this evil. Join in our prayer meetings.
